A Multidisciplinary Expert Forum on Postoperative Nausea and Vomiting

CME/CPE/CNE certified multimedia CD featuring expert panel discussions and 3-D mechanism of action animations

Release Date: December 15, 2009
Expiration Date: December 16, 2010
Estimated Time To Complete Activity: 1 hour 35 minutes

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of anesthesiologists, nurse anesthetists, postoperative nurses, perianesthesia nurses, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and health system pharmacists involved in the care of postsurgical patients.

Purpose

To educate healthcare professionals on prophylaxis and treatment of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV)/postdischarge nausea and vomiting (PDNV).

Program Overview

Each year, approximately 75 million Americans are affected by PONV/PDNV, which remains the most common postoperative complication. It is the most frequently reported fear about elective surgeries, and is considered more debilitating than postoperative pain. Not only does PONV/PDNV have a significant impact on patient quality of life, but it could also lead to subsequent complications such as aspiration and wound dehiscence. These concerns persist despite the availability of new antiemetic agents with proven efficacy, multimodal interventions, better understanding of patient risk stratification, and the development of several consensus-based clinical practice guidelines.

This Web-based certified educational activity will bring together a multidisciplinary panel of PONV/PDNV thought leaders to review the state of PONV/PDNV prophylaxis and treatment. A review of central and peripheral neurotransmitters that stimulate nausea/vomiting and the antiemetics designed to antagonize such signaling will be described in 3-D video animations. Other topics presented will include identified risk factors, clinical practice guidelines, assessment, and patient education. A substantial portion of the program will be dedicated to group discussion regarding how consensus-based PONV/PDNV guidelines can be better adopted in community clinical practice.

An archive of this forum will be posted on IMERonline.com. A CE-certified CD of this program will be made available as a professional resource, which will include the library of 3-D video animations and forum discussion.

Safeguards Against Commercial Bias

IMER and PIM affirm that the content and format of its CME activities and related materials promote improvements and quality in healthcare and do not promote a specific proprietary business interest of a commercial entity. To this end, IMER and PIM employ several strategies to ensure the absence of commercial bias, including but not limited to review of all planned content for CME activities jointly sponsored by IMER and PIM to ensure adherence to the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education’s content validation statements and resolution of any actual or perceived conflict of interest that exist. We employ three metrics as we review materials:

1. Fair balance

2. Scientific objectivity of studies mentioned in the materials or used as the basis for content

3. Appropriateness of patient care recommendations made to learners
